Great Move on GBP/CAD Using Multiple Time Frames

Using multiple time frames to identify and capture trading opportunities is made a lot easier with the best forex trading indicators, and we had a great example earlier today on the GBP/CAD. Based on a combination of the hourly chart for the Matrix and 15 min chart of the Array, resulted in a 200+ move in these highly charged markets. The indicators were supported with a 3-pip Renko and a 3-minute time chart. The two charts show above explain the result and all supported by our volume price analysis methodology.

GBP and CAD Fundamentals: Understanding the Pair and Multi-Timeframe Trading

The British Pound (GBP) is the currency of the United Kingdom, one of the world’s largest and most influential economies. The UK is a major financial services hub (London is the world’s leading international banking and forex centre), with significant contributions from professional services, manufacturing, and North Sea oil/gas. GBP is a high-beta, risk-sensitive currency: it tends to strengthen in risk-on environments (global growth, equity rallies) and weaken sharply in risk-off periods (geopolitical tension, recession fears).

Key fundamental drivers include Bank of England interest rates, inflation (CPI), GDP growth, employment data, Brexit-related developments, and UK political stability. GBP pairs are highly liquid and volatile, especially during the London session.

The Loonie

The Canadian Dollar (CAD), often called the “Loonie,” is a classic commodity currency. Canada’s economy is heavily tied to natural resources—oil, natural gas, metals (gold, copper), and lumber. The Bank of Canada (BoC) sets policy rates, but CAD is primarily driven by global commodity prices (especially crude oil—Canada is a major exporter) and the US economy (75% of exports go to the US). CAD strengthens when oil prices rise or risk appetite is high, and weakens during commodity slumps or global slowdowns. Like AUD and NZD, CAD is considered a risk-on currency.

GBP/CAD as a Pair GBP/CAD is a cross pair (neither currency is USD), which makes it particularly sensitive to relative economic performance and risk sentiment between the UK and Canada. It combines a high-beta, service-driven currency (GBP) with a commodity-heavy one (CAD). When global growth is strong and oil prices are rising, CAD tends to outperform GBP. In risk-off environments, GBP can strengthen as a relative safe haven compared to commodity-linked CAD.

The pair often shows sharp moves during London session (UK data) and New York session (US/Canadian data). Volume price analysis (VPA) is especially powerful here: volume surges on GBP strength confirm institutional buying, while low volume rallies in CAD signal potential exhaustion.

The Critical Role of Multiple Timeframes No single timeframe tells the full story. Multi-timeframe analysis is essential for high-probability trading. Use higher timeframes (daily/weekly) to establish the overall trend, bias, and key support/resistance zones—answering “Where is the market going?” Lower timeframes (1-hour, 15-min, 5-min) provide precise entry and exit timing—answering “When do I get in/out?” For GBP/CAD, the daily chart may show a clear uptrend (CAD weakness), while the 1-hour reveals pullbacks or breakouts.

VPA across timeframes adds conviction: if daily volume confirms accumulation, lower timeframe low-volume pullbacks become buying opportunities. This layered approach reduces false signals, improves risk-reward, and helps traders avoid trading against the dominant trend.
