Week Ahead: Fed Takes Centre Stage Wednesday, BoJ Closes It Out Friday
It’s a big central-bank week. The clear highlight is Wednesday’s Federal Reserve decision, with the Bank of Japan following on Friday. Markets are pricing a hold from both, but the tone and guidance will matter more than the decision itself — especially with oil still elevated and inflation sticky across major economies.
Wednesday – Federal Reserve
The FOMC is widely expected to leave the fed funds rate unchanged in the 3.75–4.00% range after September’s 25 bp hike. Futures and economist surveys show only low-teens odds of another move this week, with a December hike now the base case. Chair Kevin Warsh and other officials have recently pushed back against consecutive hikes, stressing patience and data dependence. Expect a “hawkish hold”: rates steady, but the statement and press conference (2:30 pm ET) likely keep December firmly on the table and flag upside inflation risks. Possible market reaction
- A measured hold with no strong December signal could support risk assets and modestly soften the dollar.
- Any clearer indication that another hike is coming in December (or a hawkish dissent) would likely firm the USD, lift yields, and pressure equities.
- Oil remaining elevated on Middle East tensions is the key wild card that could keep the Fed’s language firmer than markets would like.
Also on Wednesday: Bank of Canada and RBNZ decisions, plus Microsoft and Alphabet after the close.Friday – Bank of JapanThe BoJ is expected to hold at 1.25% after its September hike. It will also release an updated Outlook Report. Officials look set to signal that underlying inflation is now around the 2% target and leave the door open for a December (or January) move, maintaining a gradual tightening bias.
Possible market reaction
- A hawkish hold (upgraded inflation forecasts + clear December path) could support the yen.
- A more cautious or balanced tone would likely weigh on JPY, especially if the Fed has just delivered a firm message.
Broader backdrop
Thursday brings U.S. Q3 GDP (advance) and September PCE, plus the ECB (hold expected). Elevated oil, strong U.S. activity, and the AI-related earnings calendar add extra layers of volatility risk. Overall lean: this is a “hawkish pause” week. Risk assets may find some support if both the Fed and BoJ sound measured, but any confirmation that further tightening is still coming — particularly with oil high — keeps the dollar bid and risk sentiment fragile. Clear levels and smaller sizing make sense into Wednesday.
